Over-the-Rhine

Located on the edge of downtown, Over-the-Rhine offers sharp contradictions. It is the largest national historic district in the United States, including the largest collection of urban Italianate buildings in the country. Types of housing range from small two-bedroom homes on tree-lined streets to multistory residential and commercial buildings. Over-the-Rhine’s Main Street is home to art galleries, trendy bars and restaurants, and several high-tech companies.

The neighborhood is also home to Findlay Market, the oldest indoor-outdoor market selling cheese, meat, and produce. A multimillion-dollar, city-financed renovation of the market was recently completed. The neighborhood is also home to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, housed in Music Hall; Memorial Hall; the city’s performing-arts high school; the Ensemble Theater Company and other drama groups; and the Cincinnati Art Academy.

Over-the-Rhine is bordered by Clifton Heights and Mt. Auburn on the north, by Mt. Auburn and Pendleton on the east, by the Central Business District and the West End on the south, and by the West End on the west. Over-the-Rhine contains portions of five census tracts (9, 10, 16, 17, and 25) included in the Empowerment Zone.
